Từ vựng IELTS Writing Task 2: Từ học thuật giúp đạt điểm cao
Trong IELTS Writing Task 2, từ vựng trực tiếp quyết định 25% điểm số. Tiêu chí này được gọi là “Lexical Resource”, đánh giá khả năng sử dụng vốn từ đa dạng, chính xác, phù hợp về cách chọn từ và văn phong. Bạn không thể đạt Band 7 chỉ bằng cách viết bài luận có cấu trúc tốt nhưng dùng từ vựng cơ bản — bản thân từ ngữ cũng rất quan trọng.

Từ vựng được chấm điểm thế nào trong Writing Task 2?
Giám khảo IELTS đánh giá Lexical Resource dựa trên bốn khía cạnh:
- Độ rộng — Bạn có dùng đủ nhiều từ khác nhau không? Lặp “important” năm lần trong một bài luận sẽ làm giảm điểm.
- Độ chính xác — Bạn có chọn đúng từ không? Dùng “emphasize” khi định nói “highlight” là một lỗi.
- Mức độ phù hợp — Từ ngữ có đủ trang trọng cho bài viết học thuật không? “A lot of” quá thân mật; “a considerable number of” phù hợp hơn.
- Kết hợp từ — Các từ bạn ghép với nhau có nghe tự nhiên không? “Make a decision” là đúng; “do a decision” thì không.

5 lỗi làm giảm điểm từ vựng Writing
1. Lặp đi lặp lại cùng một từ. Nếu viết “important” bốn lần, điểm độ rộng vốn từ sẽ giảm. Hãy dùng từ đồng nghĩa: crucial, essential, pivotal, vital.
2. Dùng ngôn ngữ thân mật. Tránh dạng rút gọn (don’t, won’t), tiếng lóng (kids, stuff, cool) và từ mơ hồ (things, a lot). Văn viết học thuật cần văn phong trang trọng.
3. Gượng ép dùng sai từ phức tạp. “The government should ameliorate the situation by doing education” còn tệ hơn “The government should improve access to education.” Độ chính xác quan trọng hơn sự phức tạp.
4. Bỏ qua kết hợp từ. “Make progress” là đúng; “do progress” thì không. “A significant number” phù hợp; “a significant amount of people” thì không (dùng “number” với danh từ đếm được).
5. Chỉ đặt từ nối ở đầu câu. Mẫu “However, X. Furthermore, Y. Moreover, Z.” nghe máy móc. Hãy thay đổi vị trí từ nối: “X, however, remains contested.”

Tôi cần đạt điểm từ vựng bao nhiêu để đạt Band 7 tổng thể?
Bạn cần đạt ít nhất Band 7 ở tiêu chí Lexical Resource để có thể đạt Band 7 tổng thể trong Writing. Điều này có nghĩa là thể hiện “vốn từ đủ rộng để linh hoạt và chính xác ở một mức độ nhất định”, chỉ “đôi khi chọn từ chưa chính xác”.
Tôi nên dùng bao nhiêu từ học thuật trong một bài luận?
Không có con số cố định. Hãy tập trung thay 5–8 từ cơ bản bằng từ học thuật trong mỗi bài luận. Như vậy là đủ để thể hiện vốn từ đa dạng mà không khiến bài viết gượng ép.
Tôi có thể dùng thành ngữ trong Writing Task 2 không?

Tôi nên học từ theo chủ đề hay theo chức năng?
Cả hai. Học từ vựng theo chủ đề (môi trường, công nghệ, giáo dục) để có từ dùng cho mọi đề luận. Học từ vựng theo chức năng (tương phản, nguyên nhân-kết quả, nêu ý kiến) để biết cách cấu trúc lập luận. Cẩm nang này bao gồm cả hai nhóm.
Làm sao để tránh lặp lại cùng một từ?
Hãy tạo chuỗi từ đồng nghĩa. Với “increase”: rise, surge, escalate, grow, expand, soar. Với “important”: crucial, significant, essential, vital, pivotal, fundamental. Luyện thay các từ này trong bài luận cho đến khi cách dùng trở nên tự nhiên.
