mitigate the impact、a compelling case、far-reaching implications “This change will probably affect many parts of society in an important way.” の代わりに “This change may have far-reaching implications.”
レポートでは make a strong case を使えますが、友人には “I have a good reason.”
|---|---|---|
| make a compelling case | 非常に説得力のある根拠を示す | The researchers make a compelling case for earlier intervention. |
| substantiate a claim | 主張を証拠で裏付ける | You must substantiate the claim with reliable data. |
| draw a distinction | 重要な違いを示す | The report draws a distinction between cost and value. |
| reach a consensus | 合意に達する | The committee failed to reach a consensus. |
| challenge an assumption | 既存の前提に疑問を投げかける | The findings challenge the assumption that growth is always positive. |
| a flawed argument | 重要な欠点のある論証 | It is a flawed argument because it ignores the evidence. |
| a coherent framework | 論理的で整理された枠組み | The policy needs a coherent framework. |
| mounting evidence | 次々に増えている証拠 | There is mounting evidence that sleep improves memory. |
substantiate a claim with data とは言えますが、方針については make a case for a policy と言います。
|---|---|---|
| give rise to | 引き起こす、招く | The proposal could give rise to legal disputes. |
| have far-reaching implications | 広範囲に重要な影響を及ぼす | Automation may have far-reaching implications for work. |
| bring about a change | 変化をもたらす | Public pressure brought about a change in the law. |
| mitigate the impact | 悪影響を軽減する | New shelters can mitigate the impact of extreme weather. |
| exacerbate the problem | 問題を悪化させる | Delays may exacerbate the problem. |
| undergo a transformation | 大きな変化を経験する | The industry has undergone a transformation. |
| a marked decline | はっきりした減少 | The survey shows a marked decline in trust. |
| sweeping changes | 広範に及ぶ大きな変化 | The reform introduced sweeping changes to the system. |
|---|---|---|
| take precedence over | 〜より優先される | Safety should take precedence over speed. |
| be at odds with | 〜と矛盾する、対立する | The decision is at odds with the stated policy. |
| strike a balance | 妥当なバランスを取る | Schools must strike a balance between freedom and support. |
| a vested interest | 結果に対する個人的利害 | The company has a vested interest in the outcome. |
| a contentious issue | 強い意見の対立がある問題 | Tax policy remains a contentious issue. |
| mutually exclusive | 両立しない、相互排他的な | The two options are not mutually exclusive. |
| inextricably linked | 切り離せないほど結び付いた | Poverty and health are inextricably linked. |
| a stark contrast | はっきりした対照 | There is a stark contrast between the two regions. |
|---|---|---|
| categorically deny | 断固として否定する | The minister categorically denied the allegation. |
| flatly refuse | はっきりと拒否する | The landlord flatly refused to negotiate. |
| fall short of expectations | 期待に届かない | The results fell short of expectations. |
| prove counterproductive | 意図と逆の結果になる | A strict ban may prove counterproductive. |
| wholly inadequate | まったく不十分な | The funding is wholly inadequate. |
| a viable solution | 実行可能な解決策 | We need a viable solution before winter. |
| a resounding success | 明白で大きな成功 | The campaign was a resounding success. |
| warrant attention | 注意深く検討する価値がある | The trend warrants attention from policymakers. |
|---|---|
| This could cause more problems. | This could give rise to further concerns. |
| The policy has big effects. | The policy may have far-reaching implications. |
| We need to make the bad effect smaller. | We need to mitigate the adverse impact. |
| The two things are very different. | There is a stark contrast between the two. |
| The plan is not good enough. | The plan falls short of the required standard. |
