英語のつなぎ言葉100+：ライティング用コネクター
つなぎ言葉は、考えと考えの関係を示します。追加なのか、理由なのか、対比なのか、結論なのかを読者に伝える役割があります。つなぎ言葉がないと、段落は独立した文の並びに見えます。一方で使いすぎると、不自然な文章になります。目的は飾りではなく、論理を見えやすくすることです。
このガイドでは、英語のコネクター100+を機能別にまとめ、句読点と文体の注意点も説明します。各役割で数個ずつ使える表現を覚え、必要な関係がある場所でだけ使いましょう。

つなぎ言葉の基本
一文の中で二つの節をつなぐ表現もあれば、新しい文を始める表現や文中に情報を足す表現もあります。意味だけでなく文法も重要です。

フォーマルな表現と日常的な表現
最もフォーマルな語が最良とは限りません。場面に合わせて選びましょう。

個人的なメールなら so や but の方が分かりやすいことが多いです。アカデミックな段落では therefore や however が論理を見つけやすくします。形式的に見せるためだけに moreover を使わないでください。
論理が見える段落の作り方
一つの段落では、次の流れを試してください。
- 主な主張を一つ述べる。
- because、since、therefore で理由や結果を説明する。
- for instance または such as で例を出す。
- 必要なら however または although で制限を加える。
- 短い結果か次の考えへのつながりで終える。
分かりにくい例: Online lessons are flexible. Students can study at home. Some students feel alone. Teachers should communicate often.
分かりやすい例: Online lessons are flexible because students can study at home. However, some students may feel isolated. Therefore, teachers should communicate often and provide regular feedback.
二つ目がよいのは、難しい語が多いからではありません。原因、対比、結果が読者に見えるからです。
つなぎ言葉でよくある間違い
- すべての文を however で始めない。本当の対比のときだけ使う。
- despite of とは言わない。despite the problem または in spite of the problem が正しい。
- because と because of を混同しない。前者の後は節、後者の後は名詞句。
- 二つの完全な文をコンマと however だけでつながない。
- 順序がすでに明らかな場所に、不要なコネクターを足さない。
