類語辞典は選択肢をくれますが、どの類義語が学術ライティングに適切かは教えてくれません。”Big”には”huge”、”enormous”、”massive”などの類義語がありますが、学術ライティングでは”substantial”、”considerable”、”significant”の方が適切です。使う前に必ず類義語が学術レジスターに合っているか確認しましょう。

IELTSエッセイで学術類義語はいくつ使えばよい?

IELTSライティングでは、キーワードは各1回だけ使うのが目標です。トピックが”education”なら、”education”を1回使い、次は”learning”、”academic development”、”schooling”、”the education system”に切り替えましょう。エッセイ全体で10〜15個の適切な学術類義語があれば、無理がなくLexical Resourceで高得点が狙えます。

学術ライティングで”utilize”は”use”より良い?

必ずしもそうではありません。”Utilize”は特に「本来の目的とは異なる用途に使う」または「生産的に使う」という意味です。単に「使う」という意味なら、”use”で学術ライティングに十分です。問題なく使えるところで”utilize”を使いすぎるのはよくある間違いで、かえってライティングを弱めます。”employ”、”apply”、”implement”の方がしばしばより正確です。
