|---|---|---|
The effect was big. | The effect was substantial, but not uniform. |
This is true. | The evidence strongly suggests this, although it is not conclusive. |
The plan is bad. | The plan is impractical and may prove counterproductive. |
You are wrong. | I see the point, but I would challenge the assumption. |
|---|---|---|---|
| apparently | 見たところ、どうやら | apparently minor | The change was apparently minor but affected many users. |
| arguably | 論理的には主張できる | arguably the best | This is arguably the most practical option. |
| inherently | 本質的に | inherently difficult | The task is inherently difficult, not impossible. |
| ostensibly | 表向きは | ostensibly simple | The rule is ostensibly simple but hard to apply. |
| presumably | おそらく | presumably aware | They were presumably aware of the risk. |
| relatively | 比較的 | relatively limited | The evidence is relatively limited so far. |
| seemingly | 一見すると | seemingly unrelated | Two seemingly unrelated events may share a cause. |
| tentative | 暫定的な | tentative conclusion | We can draw only a tentative conclusion. |
| unprecedented | 前例のない | unprecedented demand | The service faced unprecedented demand. |
| virtually | ほとんど、実質的に | virtually impossible | Without access, the task is virtually impossible. |
|---|---|---|---|
| attribute | 原因を〜に帰する | attribute success to | The team attributes its success to clear priorities. |
| corroborate | 別の情報で裏づける | corroborate the findings | A second survey corroborates the findings. |
| discern | 明確でないものを見分ける | discern a trend | It is difficult to discern a trend in one week of data. |
| discrepancy | あるべきでない食い違い | a discrepancy between | We found a discrepancy between the two figures. |
| implication | あり得る影響、含意 | far-reaching implications | The decision has far-reaching implications. |
| inference | 根拠から導く推論 | draw an inference | We should not draw an inference from one case. |
| premise | 論証の出発点となる前提 | a flawed premise | The proposal rests on a flawed premise. |
| rationale | 判断の理由・論理 | the rationale for | Please explain the rationale for the change. |
| substantiate | 証拠で立証する | substantiate a claim | The author fails to substantiate the claim. |
| underlying | 表面の下にある、根本の | an underlying cause | We need to address the underlying cause, not only the result. |
“The data suggest a discrepancy. Before we draw an inference, we need to identify the underlying cause and substantiate the conclusion.”
|---|---|---|---|
| beneficial | 有益な | mutually beneficial | The partnership could be mutually beneficial. |
| counterproductive | 目的と逆の結果になる | prove counterproductive | Constant reminders may prove counterproductive. |
| detrimental | 有害な | detrimental to trust | The delay was detrimental to public trust. |
| feasible | 実行可能な | financially feasible | Is the project financially feasible? |
| futile | 無益な、結果が見込めない | a futile attempt | Without agreement, further discussion is futile. |
| indispensable | 不可欠な | an indispensable role | Clear feedback plays an indispensable role in learning. |
| marginal | わずかな、重要でない | marginal improvement | The update produced only a marginal improvement. |
| pragmatic | 現実的な | a pragmatic compromise | We reached a pragmatic compromise. |
| sustainable | 長期的に持続可能な | sustainable solution | A sustainable solution must fit the team’s capacity. |
| viable | 成功して機能できる | commercially viable | The plan is not commercially viable yet. |
|---|---|---|
| I concede that … | 相手の一部を認める | I concede that the first option is faster. |
| That said, … | 対照的な点を加える | That said, it may create a larger problem later. |
| I would question whether … | 前提を丁寧に問い直す | I would question whether the evidence is strong enough. |
| The caveat is that … | 重要な制限を述べる | The caveat is that the sample is very small. |
| We should distinguish between … | 混同されている二点を分ける | We should distinguish between cost and value. |
| It would be premature to … | 行動が早すぎると言う | It would be premature to announce a result. |
| The proposal warrants … |
| There is scope for … | 改善の余地を示す | There is scope for improvement in the process. |
| The priority should be … | 最優先を示す | The priority should be to protect users. |
| Weigh up the trade-offs | 利点と欠点を比べる | We need to weigh up the trade-offs carefully. |
|---|---|---|---|
| alleviate | 問題を軽くする | alleviate a burden | The new tool should alleviate the administrative burden. |
| consolidate | 強化する、統合する | consolidate gains | The team needs time to consolidate its gains. |
| deteriorate | 悪化する | deteriorate rapidly | Conditions deteriorated rapidly after the outage. |
| exacerbate | 悪化させる | exacerbate inequality | The policy may exacerbate inequality. |

| gradual | 段階的な | gradual shift | We observed a gradual shift in behaviour. |
| pervasive | 広く浸透した | pervasive influence | Social media has a pervasive influence on language. |
| preliminary | 予備的な | preliminary results | These are preliminary results, not final findings. |
| reconcile | 二つを両立させる | reconcile two aims | We must reconcile speed with accuracy. |
| subtle | 微妙だが重要な | subtle distinction | There is a subtle distinction between the terms. |

C2 proficiency
