“Hit the road” (rời đi) và “hit the books” (học chăm chỉ).
Những thành ngữ khác (“in the long run”, “the bottom line”) dùng được trong cả ngữ cảnh trang trọng lẫn thân mật.

Ví dụ: “The host told a joke to break the ice at the party.”
Những thành ngữ được dùng thường xuyên nhất trong tiếng Anh hằng ngày gồm: (1) a piece of cake (điều gì đó dễ dàng), (2) break the ice (làm dịu không khí xã giao), (3) hit the nail on the head (nói chính xác), (4) under the weather (cảm thấy không khỏe), (5) once in a blue moon (rất hiếm khi), (6) call it a day (dừng làm việc), (7) in the long run (xét về lâu dài), (8) the last straw (rắc rối cuối cùng), (9) on the same page (đồng thuận), (10) a no-brainer (quyết định hiển nhiên).
IELTS đánh giá cao ngôn ngữ học thuật trang trọng, còn nhiều thành ngữ quá thân mật (“a piece of cake”, “go bananas”). Những lựa chọn an toàn hơn gồm “in the long run”, “the tip of the iceberg” và “a double-edged sword”, phù hợp với ngữ cảnh học thuật.
